During spring every year when I was little, I would sit outside with my mom in our garden pulling out the weeds from the soil before we plant our new plants there.
Most of the time we would work in silence but I remember once when it was near my graduation from elementary school I asked my mom what if I didn’t win any awards or get any trophies (my school had a big award ceremony for the graduating class every year)?
I was really competitive back then and knowing that my sister got one when she graduated made me want it even more and I thought she would be disappointed if I didn’t get any.
What she told me surprised me. She said, “It’s okay if you don’t get a trophy. I know how hard you worked and that is enough.”
We often look around and see how “successful” everyone’s lives are and look into our own life and feel that we are not progressing. That it doesn’t matter how hard we work because know one would see us anyhow. That because we didn’t get that award or we failed at something then it means we’re not worthy.
It is okay to feel small and not as strong in that moment or day but also know that no matter your circumstances, you matter. You matter when you are seen. You matter when you are not.
The award didn’t mean so much to my mom but rather my own happiness. At the end of the day, it is just a physical object. What is most important to her is me believing in myself and knowing that I am doing the best that I can with what I have and where I am right now.
