I wonder how we can possibly eat the cases of strawberries in front of us.
My dad usually takes a week off every summer as his vacation week. We don’t go anywhere, but he likes to stay home to take care of anything that needs to be repaired in our house.
On the weekend, we would wait until the end of the day to go to the farmer’s market knowing the produce would be sold at a reduced price as everyone was rushing to get home and the market was closing soon. There were times when we would buy cases and cases of strawberries as my mom knew they were my favorite. The strawberries were ripe and their fragrance would fill our car. My mom and I would sit at the backseat, holding onto the cases of strawberries, trying not to smush them and I would wonder how we could possibly eat them all.
By the time we get home, it’ll be dark out and all of us are hungry. My mom would get dinner ready while I sorted through all the strawberries looking for any of them that are bruised and should be eaten first. I would gather a large basket of them. If dinner is not ready yet, I would wash them all and set them out on our dinner table for everyone to snack on. My dad would take a few to eat, telling us how sweet they are. I would stay silent savoring every strawberry.
By the time dinner is ready, I would be too full to eat , not a surprise. I would still have a small bowl of rice though and whatever small dishes my mom made so that my mom would not scold me. Strawberries are still my favorite fruit and every year when they are in season, I will remember this childhood memory.
What fruit are you most excited for to be in season?
